Located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, adjacent to the cruise ship harbor and a short walk away from Las Canteras city beach and the El Muelle Shopping Mall, visitors will find the Poema del Mar Aquarium.
Opened in 2017, the aquarium boasts more than 350 species of exotic marine life, 2000 species of flora and the re-creation of over 35 unique ecosystems from around the world. There is also a restaurant and gift shop.
The name, Poema del Mar translates as “Poem of the Sea” and is reflected in both the stunning aquarium and the beautiful backdrop of Gran Canaria. Examples of species that live in the waters of the Canaries can be found in the El Veril exhibit located within the aquarium. A not to miss is the Pejeperro which has become known as the champion species of all the islands and is represented in the Poema del Mar’s logo.
Guests enter the aquarium through a turn-style, pass through a tunnel and finally walk across a glass floor displaying fish swimming right under their feet! The aquarium is divided into the three exhibit areas listed below:
The Jungle exhibit is both aquarium and garden. Surrounded by trees, rocks, bridges and the beautifully reproduced landscapes from the five continents, guest will feel as if they have entered a real jungle.
In the Reef area guests will travel down a spiral walkway passing an expansive cylinder tank containing over 400.00 liters of water. Swimming inside the tank visitors will see colorful fish and many coral reefs. Mangroves, Jellyfish and the popular Nemo Kids exhibit are also housed in this section.
The trip ends in the Deep Ocean. Featuring the world’s largest curved glass window, measuring 36 meters long and 7 meters high, this area offers guests spectacular views of Sea Dragons, Octopuses, Sharks and more.
Dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity, and following the guidelines set by Loro Parque Fundación (LPF), the Poema del Mar works to protect endangered species including the Loggerhead Turtle, Hammerhead Shark and Angelfish.
