Park Güell – The Most Unique Park in the World!

Park Güell is the last big project that the famous architect Antoni Gaudi designed for entrepreneur, Eusebio Güell.  It is built up the side of a mountain, overlooking the flatter parts of Barcelona, the port, and the ocean.

The park contains amazing stone structures, stunning tiling and fascinating buildings. You can see from this picture the Gaudí dragon fountain that is at the entrance to Güell park. This dragon is adorned in beautiful colored tiling and there is something rather hypnotic and magical about it.

Here you can see a walkway supported by twisting rock pillars that seem to be growing out of the ground like tree trunks. Although these are rather irregular in shape they do feel strangely natural too.
Gaudí was strongly influenced by natural shapes and used them in his work.

Park Güell is filled with fanciful walkways, a large plaza held up by romanesque columns and surrounded with a snake of continuous concrete benches. In keeping with Gaudi’s philosophy that nature should be the inspiration (there are few straight lines in nature) and that architecture should be in the service of humanity, those benches are the most comfortable bit of concrete you’ll ever sit upon.

Park Güell is home to famous Gaudi houses and sculptures. There is a small house in the park which Gaudi lived in at one stage of his life. The house has now been converted into a museum and contains interesting furniture also designed by Gaudi. It’s a lovely place to spend a late afternoon and evening in Barcelona.  You will not find any park like this one in the world!
The park is extremely popular (it gets an estimated four million visitors a year, about 86% of them tourists). Access is limited to a certain number of people every half-hour, and it’s wise to book ahead online (you’ll also save a bit on the admission fee).
