León, Spain – “Gastronomy Capital of Spain in 2018”

Why León, Spain is the place to meet in 2018?
Picture this: a quiet city easy to walk around, with a big history, culture and traditions, elected as “Gastronomy Capital of Spain in 2018.”

Meeting planners understand the importance food and beverage has on a meeting, and it is often one of the largest expenses in an event. Food is tied to the basics of hospitality. The idea of hospitality goes back to biblical times, when people would open their homes to guests, even strangers, and break bread. This idea of sharing a meal lead to shared conversations, ideas, fellowship and connections.  This is why food options are just as important as finding the ideal venue when choosing a destination.
Spain Gastronomy is known to be rich and diverse just as the country landscape. Fresh ingredients, excellence in cooking, bright old traditions and promoting new culinary concepts, have led Spain to be on the top of the culinary list in Europe.

León has been named “Gastronomy Capital of Spain” in 2018. The city won this highly coveted title by offering excellent cuisine in quality restaurants, while also promoting gastronomy tourism, quality products and traditional cuisine. It also recognizes the coming together of culture, heritage and gastronomy in the creation of exceptional visitor experiences. A large number of events will be held throughout the year.
León is located in the northwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula, 209 miles from Madrid. A great number of visitors travel to this bright and open city during Semana Santa [Holy Week, the week preceding Easter in the Catholic calendar], and a tourist attraction throughout the country.

Once part of an old kingdom, the city played a key role in the route of the Camino de Santiago, one of the most important historical references of the town. Founded on what was once the Roman military camp for the Legio VII Gemina in Hispania in 74 AD. The city is home to an enviable collection of monuments that embraces almost all artistic styles. The pleasant walk along the rivers crossing the city is a relaxing pastime for many of the inhabitants of León.
If you consider bringing a group to León in 2018, plan ahead by calling the Tourist Office of Spain in Chicago at (612) 642-1992.
