Coffee Enthusiasts Delight in Rare Spanish Coffee

Did you know there is only one place in Europe that grows and cultivates coffee?  The Agaete Valley is the only place in Europe that grows, cultivate and produces coffee.  Agaete is a municipality of the Las Palmas province on the Canary Islands in Spain. Agaete is also where a special coffee is grown.  The cultivation process of this coffee goes back to the 19th century and is unique in that what is grown and cultivated is one of the rarest coffees in the Coffea arabica coffee type.  The beans are scarce and quite ancient; thus, making it even more special.

The coffee is grown on plantations.  The coffee plants are traditionally planted along the plantation borders with a small scale production.  Production in the entire Agaete Valley rarely exceeds 1500 kilograms.  The coffee variety grown is Typica, one of the oldest coffee bean varieties that is not produced by any other country.

The Agaete Valley is known for this coffee, but plantations typically also produce other crops including oranges, lemons, papayas, guavas, mangos, and avocados. The Bodega Los Berrazales is set on a 200-year-old farm, the La Laja Farm at the foot of the cliffs of Tamadaba.  This working plantation also offers tours for incentive groups and individuals.

Incentive groups visiting the plantation learn about the coffee process and participate in harvesting, drying, roasting and blending the beans.  Afterwards, there is time to enjoy sipping a hot cup of that rare coffee that traditionally is consumed black with no sugar.  Hints of cocoa combined with green apple and a caramelization of the fruits make it taste extraordinary without sugar or cream.  The plantation is also a winery that has won several awards for its wines.  During the tour, guests learn about the plantation, the coffee process and can sip coffee, wine and enjoy many of the fruits also grown there.  This unique destination and Bodega Los Berrazales will be one for your incentive group that they will talk about for a long time.  Check out their website – Bodega Los Berrazales
