VALENCIA REGION, HOMELAND OF THE BORGIAS

One of the most intriguing and original ways of visiting the province of Valencia is by following the Borgia route in the steps of one of the most powerful families in the Renaissance.
Few families in Valencian history have produced as many legends as the Borgia. Alejandro Dumas, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez or Mario Puzo are some of the writers that have published books about this enigmatic family. Without doubt, one of the most relevant books in literary history was inspired by one of the members of this saga, Cesare Borgia, i.e., “The Prince” by Machiavelli.

The Borja or Borgia, as they were known in Italy, gave Valencia two Popes, Alexander VI and Calixtus III. You just have to peer through the baroque door of the cathedral to find two medallions engraved by Francisco Vergara with the image of the two popes greeting those who look at them.
The Borgias held many positions of civil and church power, such as their scion, Saint Francis Borgia, who was the third general of the Society of Jesus (1565-1572). The presence of this dynasty in cinema, scenic arts and universal literature bears witness to their clout.

The cultural route begins at the Collegiate Basilica of Santa María in Gandia and goes through the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Cotalba (Alfahuir), the Monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna (Simat de Valldigna), Oratory of the Borgias (Canals). It delves into Xátiva, the birthplace of the dynasty, and therefore one of the key locations in this path alongside Gandia, and it concludes in the Cathedral of Santa María in Valencia.

This beautiful path throughout the monumental complexes of various towns in Valencia takes us back in time, allowing us to taste History with a capital H, the Vatican, palace intrigues, power, black legends, the patronage of such famous artists as Michelangelo, Pinturicchio, Bartolommeo Veneto, Tiziano, Leonardo da Vinci or Hieronymus Bosch.
This video showcases the wonders of art and heritage associated with the legacy of the Borgia dynasty.
